A significant update has dropped in Dota 2, bringing with it multiple changes to the ranked matchmaking experience. In , Valve introduced the ranked role system which assigned players to specific in-game roles. This spiked the length of queues for players, a fact that Valve tried to address in multiple ways. The change ultimately did little to improve matchmaking times or the quality of games.
This prompted Valve to roll back some of these changes, but it is unclear if this will make things any better. Having Ranked Roles matchmaking alongside Ranked Classic could serve to divide the dwindling Dota 2 player base. Alongside these changes come a shift in how MMR is adjusted from winning or losing a ranked game. Players now enter a ranked game poised to either win or lose a fixed amount of MMR. This rolls back previous changes that could see players earn only 10 MMR in victory, but lose up to 40 in defeat.
Ranked queue gets another major shakeup in latest Dota 2 update Steven R. January 17, Valve seems to be declaring its ranked roles experiment a failure.
Read our post and get the inside scoop on the Dota 2 ranking system. Learn about ranked matchmaking and matchmaking rating MMR. Like any other competitive online multiplayer title these days, Dota 2 has its very own ranking system integrated into its own matchmaking queue.
Dota 2 is meant to be played as a team game, and Valve clearly felt as a little bit of a slower upwards momentum while you’re grinding away.
We know that queue times have increased across the board recently, and the most significant factor contributing to this has been the stricter requirements that Ranked Roles imposes on the formation of matches. Prior to the introduction of Ranked Roles, the matchmaker had a wider pool of people to draw upon because of the few restrictions. In the past, when one or more players desired the same role, this conflict was resolved during the game itself, often with unpleasant results. This conflict is now resolved at queue time, but a price of this is that the matchmaker is often starved for players in the least-queued roles.
The matchmaker must wait for players in the desired roles to enter the queue, or form sub-optimal matches with the players currently in queue to satisfy all role requirements. Usually the role most in demand by the matchmaker is Hard Support, but this is not always the case, and historically this has varied based on time of day, skill bracket, region, etc. Players in the Fast Queue are given priority by the matchmaker, and will find matches much more quickly. In order to earn games for Fast Queue, you must elect to play with all roles selected.
Playing with all roles selected will also automatically place you in Fast Queue for free.

Getting into a Dota game is going to be easier going forward. Credit: Valve. After weeks of complaints from players about long matchmaking times.
Thanks to Valve, Dota 2 players that take their rank seriously have a chance to stop seeing blue. The rank disparity seems to go both ways: high-skill players smurf in lower matches for entertainment or education, and low-skill players buy higher-level accounts. Even players using smurfs in lower accounts can feel accomplished if their higher-level team carries them to victory. Already, though, criticism has arisen about the obstacles that the system creates for aspiring professional players.
Dota 2 players are hoping for the same results. Some are concerned that the phone system isolates players in much poorer regions. Since the Dota 2 authentication system only requires a basic telephone, most players will likely avoid this issue. Even age may not be an issue. In America, at least, the average age of initial smartphone ownership was estimated at about 10 years old , which may not be too far off for other countries as parents rush to keep their kids caught up with their peers.
In that case, no issues should arise—unless there are multiple Dota 2 players in the house.
Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each team occupying and defending their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a powerful character, known as a “hero”, who all have unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, players collect experience points and items for their heroes to successfully defeat the opposing team’s heroes in player versus player combat.
A team wins by being the first to destroy the other team’s “Ancient”, a large structure located within their base. Development of Dota 2 began in when IceFrog , lead designer of Defense of the Ancients , was hired by Valve to create a modernized remake for them in the Source game engine.

I believe them. Essentially matches are supposed to be balanced and fun. One of the main factors it takes into account for all this is the MMR. Of these, solo ranked has been the cause of a lot of my recent misery. Not long after this I was idling by my PC and contemplating some solo queue. There are guides on what types of heroes to play to give you the best chance of scoring a victory.
It’s been slow off the Slark. The DOTA 2 community have their theories as to what is going on and why it’s happening. “Personally I can’t.
Most Dota 2 fans aspire to emulate the best players in the world. While they might not be able to match the level of gameplay the pros constantly put out, they can certainly match their queueing times for ranked matches. How did queue times get so bad for Dota 2 solo players? The previous system split MMR into solo and party, with most players in the community acknowledging solo as the true indicator of skill for players.
Now, players would theoretically be judged by how well they played their role, regardless of whether they were solo queueing or in a party. With solo and party MMR removed, positive side effects included a renewed focus on creating full stacks of five, even at the highest level of MMR. In general, more players prefer to play core positions where they take more farm, get more items, and use them to destroy opponents.
Meanwhile, less people play support, resulting in a player count disparity and turning matchmaking into a refresher on the basic laws of supply and demand. This has resulted in a chain effect of reactions. While cores suffer from extreme queue times, hard supports are placed into matches with high variation of skill.
This results in a catch situation for both types of players where nobody obtains their desired outcome. As skill increases, the player pool also diminishes. Related: Top changes we want to see in the Dota 2 The Outlanders update. This coordination could help players decide when to play and plan schedules to take advantage of these timings.
Valve has made some changes in the latest Dota 2 patch released last night, disabling Ranked Matchmaking for South African servers, as well as for India and Dubai. Further, Valve has announced that you will need a phone number connected to your Steam account if you wish to continue playing Ranked after 4 May Below, read the explanation by Valve regarding the changes, but first…. Please note: MWEB merely provides the hardware and connectivity for the servers.
But having very tight matchmaking means longer queues. Valve could easily enforce a “wait 1 minute, if it doesn’t pop just match whoever is.
The first big and quite surprising change was that Valve got rid of Solo queue in its original form. That said, Dota is a team game, so pushing players towards playing in pre-made parties to fully enjoy the game makes a lot of sense. This might currently be a problem because the new matchmaking update makes Solo a bit less enjoyable especially on the higher MMR brackets while finding a dedicated same-skill-level party is hard.
Maybe the next logical step would be to integrate a friend-finder in the client finding people close to your skill level, play-time preference, role preference, language, etc. So, to make the overall experience better for everyone it makes sense to incentivize players to behave more heavily. They are currently employing the stick method with the low behavior score ban waves, but a carrot could also be implemented:.
For example, maintaining a behavior score above 9k can give you periodic rewards like a free Rylai Wheel spin every month or something along those lines. All of this is aimed at making the support role more enjoyable to make it possible to own and visibly decide games from a support position. Because of this, we definitely expect this trend to continue. Smurfs and Boosted Accounts have been a problem in many competitive games since matchmaking exists. Valve is working on an algorithm to detect and More accounts that are exploiting the system, but it seems that they are acknowledging this behavior is impossible to stop and are focusing their main efforts on faster calibration.
If its not that its a middle eastern fucking bastard. Ever since i quit my dota plus subscription, my behavior score is low, around 6k but im seriously not enjoying this anymore. When i watch the other teams profiles its people with full marks on farming, fighting and pushing. Dota matchmaking can go fuck itself. Matchmaking is busted actually. One of my friends wanting to learn dota.
Dota 2 update — January 16th, ⚡⚡⚡ Esports and gaming news, update for Dota 2, in which the changes were made to matchmaking. the party matches, and the scale in the number of points is reduced. The Fast/Slow queue was removed and replaced with Ranked Roles and Ranked Classic.
Getting proper matchmaking implemented in games, particularly MOBAs, is very important and Valve have been working towards getting it right. The most recent patch to hit the game continued to make improvements to the system, but there’s still a lot of work to be done, as evidenced by the long queue times. Things have gotten so bad with the queues that Valve had to release a statement to let players know they are looking into it.
They explained they might roll back some of the quality settings for this weekend as they work to figure out what is causing the long wait times. It’s never good to see a team run into snags like this, especially when it comes to something as important as matchmaking, but the developers felt like having players get into games was more important in the meantime. We are aware of matchmaking queue times taking a very long time and are working on improving it.
We may need to slightly relax a few of the new quality settings for the weekend and then we’ll continue tightening things on Monday. Another big change was 5-person parties would only be matched against fellow stacks of five, which was supposed to help level the playing field. It’s always hard for a group of randoms to take on a full group in Discord with precise communication, so it’s a welcome change. Valve’s statement made it sound like some of the stricter parts of it’s new matchmaking rules would be rolled back for the weekend while fixes were made.
So don’t be surprised if you end up with someone out of your league in your games this weekend. Valve Dota 2 matchmaking has been tough since the October 10 update.
